TEMPLE SINAI YOUTH PROGRAMS

In addition to a wonderful Religious School and Hebrew High School program, Temple Sinai offers two outstanding youth groups, both of which allow our students to be involved in the Temple community, socialize with others, and learn in settings that are incredibly warm and fun.

JORTY, our junior program, is for students in 4th-6th grades. JORTY events range from trips to the movies and baseball games to the always popular lounge nights held in the youth lounge following religious school. JORTY members have forever been very much involved in such broader Temple programs as Gleanings, the Purim Carnival, and Mitzvah Day as well. Annual JORTY membership is $18.

7th Grade Mitzvah Program
This program is a part of the 7th grade curriculum. All 7th graders are required to fulfill 13 Mitzvot before they become bar/bat mitzvah. This is the hands-on social action component of their curriculum. It is our hope that we teach our children by action and example. Therefore, the 7th grade students will have a monthly opportunity to go out into the community to do Mitzvot, hands-on community service. Each mitzvah program will take place on either Sunday mornings or Monday evenings during class hours. Examples of these programs are: visiting Sun Harbor Nursing Home, cooking for the INN (Interfaith Nutritional Network), Hatzilu Luncheon, and visiting the HUC (Hebrew Union College) soup kitchen.

SORTY, the Temple Sinai senior youth group, is for students in grades 8-12. The senior youth group is directed by a teenage board which assists the youth advisor in planning a full calendar's worth of events geared toward all members and all interests. Past events have covered the full spectrum, from Hanukkah parties to volunteer opportunities to ice skating in Manhattan and more. SORTY is also very much involved in the goings-on of Hebrew High School, often offering programs and presentations. In addition, SORTY members have been integral in such Temple wide events as Gleanings, the youth group service, the Purim Carnival, and Mitzvah Day. SORTY is a member of the National Federation of Temple Youth Groups (NFTY) and participates in both regional and national events.

HEBREW HIGH SCHOOL AT TEMPLE SINAI
Overview of the Program: The Hebrew High School program is designed for Temple Sinai teens looking to learn, volunteer, and grow in an environment that is safe and welcoming. As a community we think together about contemporary Jewish life and identity, and how each of us can challenge ourselves to take on those responsibilities that come with Jewish adulthood.

8th - 9th Grade Program: 8th-9th graders meet every Tuesday from 6:40-8:00 pm. Our evening begins with dinner and Torah at Your Table, an opportunity to engage in light discussion over pizza, salad, and soda. During this time we view movie clips, examine modern texts, and talk together about the latest issues. The evening continues with electives, an extraordinary selection of classes offered by Temple Sinai's finest teachers, meant to appeal to all interests. Past classes have ranged from Jewish Cooking to Jewish Sports Heroes to the Hesed Brigade to Israeli Movies. On a whole classes are divided into two tracks, Community Service and Art and Culture, granting students in each track the opportunity to learn not only within the classroom, but regularly interact with the community and learn in more creative ways. Past "track wide" programs have ranged from conversations with the director of the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame to making challah for those in need to meeting with members of the FDNY.

10th Grade Program: The Confirmation class meets with Rabbi White every Tuesday night to discuss those topics that speak most directly to Jewish teens today. Subjects range from relationships to identity to peer pressure, Israel, and much more. A visit to Washington DC in order to learn about the Reform movement's Religious Action Center, tour the city, spend time in Georgetown, and lobby on Capital Hill is always an enlightening and memorable experience. The highlight of the year is the Confirmation service held on Shavuot morning. This service is led entirely by members of the Confirmation class.

11th-12th Grade Program: For those preparing to graduate from high school, we provide a series of encounters and experiences geared toward the student's transition to college and beyond. 11th and 12th graders meet monthly, usually on Monday nights, with many of the meetings taking place either in Rabbi White's home or on field trips with Rabbi David around our area, and into Manhattan, so to learn via experience and discussion. Our textbook is the galleries, shows, Hillels, and synagogues that we visit. The 11th-12th grade year culminates with a moving, student-led service.

COLLEGE YOUTH

The college outreach program includes sending packages and mailings to our college population at their schools. We send them holiday packages, Jewish books and The Scribe. In addition, Temple Sinai hosts a College Night where we invite all of our college students out to dinner and then have them talk to the Senior Group about college life, applications and the interview process. College Night began in 1999 and will continue to be an annual event.

College Packages: During the academic year, our college students whose school addresses we have will receive Holiday packages for Chanukah, Purim and Passover. In addition they will acquire a Jewish book and the monthly scribe. The children of our religious school will create cards and projects for our college students, which will be included in the packages.

YOUTH LOUNGE

Temple Sinai's first Youth Lounge was completed in 1999. It is a relaxing and comfortable place where the Youth of Temple Sinai can hang out with their friends. The lounge includes the following: TV, VCR, stereo system, board games, game table and couches. Our high school students, along with the guidance of a professional artist has constructed a beautiful mural representing their trip to Israel in 2000. In addition, the legacy of our outgoing SORTY Board members will continue as they leave their hand prints on the wall.
