Getting Involved

Social Action Committee
Rich Evans - Co-chairperson
Sarah Miller - Co-chairperson

The mission of the Social Action Committee at Temple Sinai is to engage itself and, by extension, the Temple Sinai community at large in the exploration and understanding of the human needs around us - both immediate and chronic - and to develop and perform meaningful educational programs and acts of Tikkun Olam which respond to those needs. The Committee seeks opportunities to perform mitzvot reflecting the ideals of Judaism and welcomes suggestions and involvement from all temple members.

The Committee periodically invites speakers to educate and inform members of Temple Sinai on pressing and important issues such as the Environment, Hunger, Housing, and Gun Control/Violence Prevention.

Among the Committee's contributions to Temple Sinai are the High Holy Day Food Drive and Gleanings (both in conjunction with Long Island Cares), Thanksgiving Dinner Project with Trinity Episcopal Church, the Chanukah Tzedakah Outreach Project with Hatzilu and the Russian Jewish Immigrant Community in Queens, various food and personal need collections coordinated with the Religious and Hebrew School classes, a Passover Food Drive for Hatzilu Rescue Organizations, and a multi-congregational Mitzvah Day in May.

The Social Action Committee coordinates many of its programs and activities with other groups in and outside the Temple community including SORTY, Brotherhood, Adult Activity Committee, the Gay and Lesbian Inclusion Committee, neighboring Jewish congregations, the Long Island and Eastern Queens Sub-Regional Social Action Committee of the Greater New York Council of Reform Synagogues, and the Interfaith Alliance.
