Committee & Club Mission Statements

Administration Committee
The function of the Administration Committee is to act as a liaison between the Temple Board of Trustees and the Administrative staff.

Its goal is to offer administrative counsel and evaluation when needed, and to be supportive of the operational needs of the Executive Director as well as the general office personnel. This is to be accomplished with a keen sense of fiscal responsibility to the Board.

Adult Activity Club
The Adult Activity Club was founded several years ago to fill a need of older members for camaraderie and friendship in a group which would provide these members with interesting, provocative, challenging, and entertaining programs every month.

Adult Education Committee
This Committee's mission is to enhance the Congregation's knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the Jewish experience. In cooperation with the Senior Rabbi, the Committee researches, develops and implements relevant programming and events.

The Committee's specialized tasks are:
  • To research and explore program possibilities and potential topics of interest
  • To develop relevant, varied and informative programming
  • To publicize programs and events (e.g. press, posters, mailings)
  • To implement all logistical aspects of the programming (e.g. meals, reservations, etc.)

    Brotherhood Mission Statement
    We work with every arm of the Temple in order to reach our entire congregation of men, women and children - stimulating them with a variety of programs and activities affecting all levels of Jewish life. Where appropriate we will work with local community groups and other temple committees for the benefit of our Temple congregation as well as our local community to implement the following Brotherhood goals:

  • Promote Brotherhood in this Temple and help provide service and programs to the entire congregation and to the community.
  • Promote fellowship by helping to create a warm, caring, men's community.
  • Promote the importance of family togetherness through temple family activity participation.
  • Stimulate interest in Jewish worship, Jewish studies, and social service to the community.
  • Increase the Jewish spirit in the children and younger members of the congregation by providing programs that stimulate their interests in Judaism.
  • Support and promote the ideals and projects of The National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods and The Jewish Chautauqua Society.

    Building, Grounds & House Committee
    The mission of Temple Sinai's Building, Grounds and House Committee is to:
  • Oversee and maintain the building and grounds of the congregation
  • Oversee new construction
  • Formulate all of the rules governing the use of the building and grounds
  • Supervise implementation of same

    Caring Committee
    The purpose of the Caring Committee is to create a community within the Synagogue in which congregants reach out to those who are experiencing loss, grief and life cycle crises as well as in special times of celebration. Through the efforts of the Committee, interlocking support networks are created for the members of Temple Sinai.

    The goal of this committee is to work closely with the clergy and other temple committees to:
  • Provide assistance during and after Shiva
  • Visit the sick
  • Support outreach
  • Extend invitations for those who are not near loved ones
  • Offer assistance during emergencies

    Cemetery Committee
    This Committee in cooperation with the Executive Director, oversees the Temple's cemetery plots at the New Montefiore Cemetery located in Farmingdale, New York. Its specialized tasks include:
  • To make periodic visits to the cemetery
  • To inspect the up-keep of the property
  • To make recommendations, when necessary, for the expenditure of funds to ensure that these grounds are kept in the appropriate and sacred condition
  • To promote the sale of remaining plots to the Temple Membership and their families

    Chai Society
    The Chai Society's mission is to serve the members of the Temple, to further the Jewish education of its members and to have fun with several social events planned throughout the year. The Society's energies are directed toward improving Temple life, and their service spans multiple arms of the Temple.

    Choir and Music Committee
    This Committee in cooperation with the Cantor, assists in the development, enrichment and maintenance of musical activities of the Temple.

    Specialized Tasks:
  • To assist as required in the supervision and coordination of choir activities (volunteer and professional)
  • To plan and execute music festivals and concerts
  • To oversee the coordination of the music library projects
    Choir:
  • Junior Choir is open to students in Grades 3 - 6
  • Teen Choir is open to students in grades 7 -12
  • Senior Choir is open to all members of the Temple

    Education Committee
    It is the mission of the Education Committee of Temple Sinai to:
  • Provide a forum for the development of an excellent educational program which links our children to their Jewish heritage and fosters in our children a life-long commitment to Jewish values and continued learning;
  • Encourage on-going review and innovation so that our programs continue to provide a dynamic, integrated educational, spiritual and social experience;
  • Oversee the development and implementation of safety rules; and
  • Communicate with the Board of Trustees, clergy, professional and administrative staff and congregational family regarding our programs and values for teaching Jewish education to our children.

    Friend of a Friend/Chaverot
    The mission of our committee is to provide a social outreach program for women, which will enhance their connection to the synagogue and Judaism. In hopes of enriching ourselves, our community and our Temple family, our goal is to offer programs that provide spiritual and intellectual fulfillment.

    Fund-Raising Committee
    The purpose of the Fund-Raising Committee is to raise money to support the general operating budget of the temple. The dollar amount that this committee is required to raise is set each year during the budget process.

    Recent events to achieve the mission have included dinners, journals, walk-a-thons and auctions.

    Gay & Lesbian Inclusion Committee
    The Gay & Lesbian Inclusion Committee (GLIC) has adopted as its mission:
  • To provide a welcoming atmosphere and support to the Gay and Lesbian members of the congregation and to their families and friends
  • To help educate the general congregation, including the children, to accept Gays and Lesbians and their families into congregational life
  • To reach out to the Jewish Gay and Lesbian community at large and let them know that we would welcome their membership in our temple

    Interfaith Outreach Committee
    The Interfaith Outreach Committee welcomes people in interfaith relationships and families by:
  • Creating opportunities to explore sensitive, decision making issues
  • Ensuring the continued sensitivity of our school faculties and administrative staff
  • Raising awareness in our congregation to the unique challenges and circumstances faced by interfaith families and their children

    We encourage interfaith participation in our temple family.

    Liaison With Jewish Organizations
    The function of this committee is to support Israel and those individual Jewish organizations that directly impact upon our Temple, Reform Judaism and the Jewish population. We specifically fund raise for the Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA) and World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ).

    We also support Israel directly with an Israeli Vendors Fair, a celebration of Israel Independence Day and our Adopt An Israeli Family Program.

    Membership Committee
    The purpose of the Membership Committee is to engage all Temple members by providing opportunities to participate in activities that meet their spiritual, social, and educational needs.

    Committee members maintain contact with new and existing members, introduce them to the clergy and the lay leaders, familiarize them with all aspects of the congregational life and ensure that they are made to feel welcome in an effort to promote an awareness of the many ways in which the Temple can enrich their lives.

    Nursery School
    The mission of the Temple Sinai Nursery School is to provide a multi-faceted early childhood experience within a Jewish context, which facilitates the cultivation of a knowledge and joy of Jewish traditions and Jewish life and the development of lifelong Jewish values.

    Through an integrated program model, which involves both children and their parents, the Nursery School experience provides a caring and nurturing environment within which children can grow intellectually, socially and emotionally, in addition to cultivating a strong Jewish identity and connection to our Temple family.

    Public Relations Committee
    The mission of the Public Relations Committee is to inform the congregation and the local community about Temple Sinai's spiritual services, Nursery and Religious schools, programs, activities and special events.

    Religious Affairs Committee
    The Religious Affairs Committee is primarily concerned with the character of religious life within the Synagogue. The members of the committee engage in the study of Judaic teachings and contemplate their relationship to current religious practices.

    The goals of the committee are:
  • The study of Judaic teachings and their relationship to current religious practices
  • To work in close partnership with the clergy and offer lay support for religious activities
  • To act as a sounding board to feed back information to the clergy regarding religious observance
  • To make recommendations for changes in policy and practices

    Social Action Committee
    The mission of the Social Action Committee at Temple Sinai is to engage itself and, by extension, the Temple Sinai community at large in the exploration and understanding of the human needs around us - both immediate and chronic - and to develop and perform meaningful educational programs and acts of Tikkun Olam which respond to those needs. The Committee seeks opportunities to perform mitzvot reflecting the ideals of Judaism and welcomes suggestions and involvement from all temple members..Ushering Committee

    The mission of the Ushering Committee is to:
  • provide a warm and welcoming sanctuary environment for all services
  • maintain decorum and organization during services and provide assistance to congregants as needed
  • assure appropriate coverage during regular and holiday services as well as for special speaker events
  • train volunteer ushers in the ushering protocol

    Youth Activities Committee
    The mission of the Youth Activities Committee is to:

  • Provide our youth with tools to strengthen and maintain a personal connection with the Temple and Jewish life and to offer quality programs, which emphasize Jewish values and socialization.

    We achieve this goal in two ways:
  • Involving as many youth as possible in various age appropriate programs and social events that expose them to Jewish values and customs. We offer programs for:

    - JORTY (Juniors of Roslyn Temple Youth) Grades 4-6
    - 7th Grade Mitzvah Corps (in conjunction with 7th grade curriculum)
    - SORTY (Sinai of Roslyn Temple Youth) Grades 8-12
    - College Youth Programs

  • Integrating our youth into congregational life by encouraging community involvement through participation in Youth and Temple services, working with a variety of Temple committees, and planning Temple wide events including the Purim Carnival, the Hatzilu luncheon, Mitzvah Day, Gleanings and many more.
