Writing A Torah Of Our Own

A TORAH OF OUR OWN

In the Torah there are 613 mitzvot - tradition teaches that the 613th and final mitzvah is to write a Torah. For the first time in its history, Temple Sinai will write its own Torah.

A YEAR OF TORAH

It will take an entire year for our Torah to be written. We have engaged two sofrim (Torah Scribes) to help us write our new Sefer Torah (Torah Scroll). The task of writing the Torah has already begun in Israel where our Sofer Yosef Green is writing most of the Torah text, sending sections of the parchment to us with some text in outline form. Our second Sofer, Rabbi Moshe Druin, will join us at Temple Sinai in Roslyn at specific times (as listed on the PROJECT 613 SIGNING DATES SHEET) to fill in the letters that Sofer Green has outlined. When the outlined letters have been filled in, the parchments will be sewn together completing our Sefer Torah.

A NEW TORAH DONATED TO A SYNAGOGUE IN NEED

The addition of our new Torah provides us with a truly unique and meaningful charitable opportunity. We will be donating one of our Temple Sinai Torahs to a congregation in need.

Project 613 is a powerful way for you and your family to deepen your connection to Judaism and our Temple family, and to provide the opportunity to fulfill two important mitzvot- creating a Torah of our own and engaging in an act of charity as we donate one of our Torahs to a community in need.
